Jan Steen – Prayer before meal, 1660
Two things I ask of you, LORD;
do not refuse me before I die:
Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonour the name of my God.

Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen -Triptych with the adoration of the Magi, 1517
Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the LORD rises upon you.
See, darkness covers the earth
and thick darkness is over the peoples,
but the LORD rises upon you
and his glory appears over you.
Nations will come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

Advent (from the Latin word adventus meaning “coming”)
is the 4 week period before Christmas
when the Church celebrates the first coming of Christ
and anticipates his second coming.
Advent is also a spiritual journey that Christians take,
through the truths of Scripture that point to the birth of Messiah,
to a reaffirmation that he has come,
is present in the world today and will come again in glory.
Advent starts on the fourth Sunday before December 25.
The Advent wreath is a Christian tradition that symbolizes
the passage of the four weeks of Advent.
It is usually a horizontal evergreen wreath with four candles and often,
a fifth, white candle in the center.
Beginning with the First Sunday of Advent,
the lighting of a candle can be accompanied by a Bible reading and prayers.
An additional candle is lit during each subsequent week until,
by the last Sunday before Christmas,
all four candles are lit.

Now may the God of peace,
who through the blood of the eternal covenant
brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus,
that great Shepherd of the sheep,
equip you with everything good for doing his will,
and may he work in us what is pleasing to him,
through Jesus Christ,
to whom be glory for ever and ever.
Amen.

Archip Iwanowitsch Kuindshi – Rainbow
LORD, who may dwell in your sacred tent?
Who may live on your holy mountain?
The one whose walk is blameless,
who does what is righteous,
who speaks the truth from their heart;
whose tongue utters no slander,
who does no wrong to a neighbour,
and casts no slur on others;
who despises a vile person
but honours those who fear the LORD;
who keeps an oath even when it hurts,
and does not change their mind;
who lends money to the poor without interest;
who does not accept a bribe against the innocent.
Whoever does these things
will never be shaken.

But godliness with contentment is great gain.
For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it.
But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.
Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into
many foolish and harmful desires
that plunge people into ruin and destruction.
For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and
pierced themselves with many griefs.
